  • Electrical Problem on Carb'd '89

Driving to work Friday (about 8 miles) my stereo suddenly turned off. Whenever I hit a bump in the road the radio display would flash on then off again. I got to work & shut the ignition off. I tried to restart the car & everything was dead - not so much as a "click."
About 6 hours later & went out & the car started right up. I shut it off & it restarted for me just fine again. At the end of the day I left for home & it started & ran fine. Since it was starting to get dark I turned the headlights on. After about 5 minutes & heard the headlight relay clicking loudly, my dash lights went out, and my turn signals were dim. I assumed it was the alternator but I took it out & had Autozone test it. It tested fine two times. I charged the battery but have not had time to put it back together. Any ideas what is or was wrong? Stuck alternator brush? Alternator quits when it gets warm? Short in electrical system? Intermittant battery problem? The alternator is 4 years old & the battery was bought new in July.

Have you checked your ground connection?

^^^^ Agreed, and check to make sure the fuse links on fender well are clean and making a good connection. This would be a good time to change over to the PAL type fuse from the wire loop type also.
Jarring with the bumps makes that sound like a loose/corroded connector.

I know the cable connections on the battery were clean & tight but I will check & clean the other end of the ground & the fusible links. Thanks guys!
