  • Oops!Wasn't clear about wiper problem!

About wiper arm I meant control lever on steering column was loose it can be moved in a circular motion as well as the normal up and down motion.Does it just need to be replaced or is there a way to tighten it?

I had the same problem. There is a pin inside the lever that has probably come completely out, or is about to. On the inside end of the lever there is a white plastic piece with a round end; inside the lever itself is a spring that pushes against the white plastic thingy. The pin which is coming out keeps the spring from going further into the lever, and provides tension between the pin and the white plastic piece.

Pull off the steering column cover (four screws). To remove the wiper mechanism is IIRC three more screws. One is hard to reach, closer to the steering column. Use a stubby screwdriver or a right-angle ratcheting one.

I didn't try to put the pin back in. I just used a cotter pin, which worked just as well and was easier to install.

I'll give the repair a try while looking for the 626 upgrade.Did I read somewhere also that that is an intermittent switch?

That's probably what Festyboy means by the upgrade. I'm goin' JYing today to look for an intermittent wiper too. Maybe early 90s Fords/Mercurys such as Escorts, Capris and Tempos are also compatible; worth checking.

What years of 626s will work for the wiper stalk swap? And do you need the whole mechanism, to include the light stalk on the left side?
