back tires feel a little shakey on my 93 festy.... supposed to be or somethings going wrong....

  • #2
Wheels/tires shouldn't be shaky. Are they wearing badly do to poor alignment? They may just need to be balanced.

Shaky all the time, or when hitting little bumps?

If the tires wore unevenly before the alignment was done, then the alignment won't fix the wobble. You would need to replace the tires.

had this happen to me and it was the rear suspension struts that were the problem, mine was sort of hopping around corners, worth a try to get them tested as they are important for safety and vehicle handling. braking can be effected as well

From what I have read on here, your problem rests with who you had work on it. I guess there have been several people complaining about NTB's work. Also, stupid question, but did you check the lugs after they worked on it? I have a friend that got new tires from a large chain store, and they didn't torque them down. Just a thought.

Are you sure the nut is tightened properly on both rear axles, so that the wheel bearings aren't loose?

jack up the rear end and try shaking wheels by hand to see if anything is loose?

Unless you had a 4 wheel alignment they never touched the back, as the back can't easily be adjusted, it would have to be shimmed.

                          Think there called bearings!
Either the spindle nut was left loose or over torqued, either way leaves you with the need for new bearings.
Are the rear wheels making a "whirring/oscillating" noise that increases with the speed of the car?

^^^^^ I agree. It sounds like your describing loose wheel bearings. Mine were that way for thousands of miles. I had a 4 wheel alignment done several times due to odd wear patterns on the rear tires. You would have thought a reputable shop would have caught the problem, but no..... One day I took my foot and pushed on the top of the tire (redneck tire gauge) and noticed it moved about 1/8". I jacked it up and pulled the outer bearing cone out to inspect it. It looked like new, so I repacked it, adjusted the preload and the wear problem went away.

Not only will it effect tire wear, but it also puts the wheel seal in a bind which can cause uneven and excessive wear on the spindle stub shaft.

It is sounding like bearings to me too. When we bought Rasta, the right(passenger) side rear bearing was so bad, it had come completely apart to the point there were only two rollers left in the cage, and the bearing had welded itself to the stub axle. Another case of someone who did not know the right side has left hand threads on the retainer nut, and had damaged the threads allowing the nut to back off leaving the bearing loose.
