  • tranny noise

Bought a festiva a couple of weeks ago from a guy who said he changed the clutch himself. Its now making a clicking noise that sounds just a C.V. axle going bad. But it doesn't get any worse in turns and it started making the noise randomly while driving straight down the road one day. It only makes the noise when in gear and on the throttle. Doesn't matter if clutch is depressed or not. If I give it gas and its in gear it makes the clicking noise. The only time it won't make the noise is if its in nuetral or during a downshift. Even if im just sitting in the driveway with it in gear and clutch depressed it will make the noise if i give it gas.

So it has me kind of baffled. I changed the tranny fluid and it had gear oil in it. So i flushed it out and refilled with mercon ATF. Still makes the noise. I have a feeling he may have installed the clutch wrong. But I really have no idea. I have no experience working on transmissions.

    Any advice?

Do you have any free play in the clutch? When you step on the clutch you should have 1/2 an inch, give or take, before you feel the clutch start to disengage. Maybe the sound you are hearing is the throw out bearing riding on the clutch fingers.

are you positive that it has something to do with the axles or the transmission????????

sounds to me like it is the Hydraulic Lash Adjusters (HLA's) on the cylinder head under the valve cover

nah def for sure tranny/axle related. I can hear the HLA's faintly under the clicking noise still. Also, I noticed checking the tranny fluid today, that the tranny bolt next to the fill hole is not tightened all the way down. maybe 2 inches sticking out. I tryed to tighten down, but it would not budge.

Also first gear is becoming harder to engage. Have to feather the clutch alot to keep it from bucking.

if you are sitting still with the clutch depressed,
the transmission is not moving at all,
you may want to look at the water pump or all of the pulleys
