  • Stock 88LX: Sudden 3100rpm idle!

I was just running local errands today in my stock 88LX. Suddenly, upon restarting, it idles at 3100rpm. The accelator cable is NOT binding. A quick scan under the hood does not reveal anything obvious like a separated hose (the 88 has sooo many of them!).

Any thoughts as to what single component or connection failure wouild do this? Other than what this does to the vehicle's drivability, there are no other problems.

Note that ambient temperature is 50F (I'm in Seattle, not Anchorage), so I wouldn't think the choke would be activating. Besides, the car was already warmed up when this happened.

I have several shopping bags full of old 88/89 plumbing stuff, so if it's one of the unknown devices that hangs off the carb, I probably have a spare.

In the 90's we had Clinton in office. We also had Bob Hope and Johnny Cash. Now we have Obama in office and we have no Hope and no Cash.

I found the butterfly valve on the rear barrel (which I assume is the secondary?) was jammed part way open. There was slack in the throttle cable when I took the photo. I jiggled everything I could find and eventually it closed. I never figured out what was doing it.

I'm wondering if this problem is going to return when I least expect it, such as driving the steep hills in downtown Seattle or on a snowy mountain pass. I'm hoping it was just some FOD that got kicked up off the road and got jammed somewhere in the linkages.

I drove the car about 50 miles this afternoon with multiple starts and everything is back to normal. If anybody has any ideas what else might cause this (what linkage can jam the secondary like that), speak up.

I'm not sure what caused mine. I did find out when i stomped on the gas it got stuck. I did how ever end up using a spring to help keep it closed. The driving i do around here is almost never over 30. So i just kept my right foot under control from the line

I have to spray down my carbs about once a year with carb cleaner to keep everything freed up myself. I would give that a try.

thats exactly what happens to me. i gotta take the air cleaner off everytime and jiggle the fast idle control thing with a screwdriver.
it'll do the 1/8 in 13.7, spin tires, and make all my drunk buddies giggle.
