  • Grinding noise from Tranny or Clutch?

    Hi everyone,
My 88 Festy L has about 230,000 on it and I just left for a 1000 mile journey to LA when I pulled to an intersection, turned my music down and heard a loud grinding noise. I pushed in the clutch and the grinding stopped. If I put the tranny in neutral and let the clutch out, it still grinds. Any ideas? Im stuck here in wyoming until I can figure it out.
    Thanks,
    Jasper

Could be a throw out bearing ,or it could be what I just went thru, bad bearings in the tranny causing it to make noise in 1,2,3, but not in 4,and 5 I had no time to fix so it was $702.00 at the tranny shop OUCH !!

Doesn't sound good(sounds expensive). It wouldn't be the throw out bearing since it doesn't do anything when the clutch is out, only when the pedal is pushed down.

actually, our release bearings are always dragging on the pressure plate release fingers. Here's the best test; face down a hill. Start off and put in the clutch, letting the engine idle. See if the noise is present. If it is, is it following vehicle speed or engine speed. Do the same thing again with the engine idling and the trans in neutral, clutch pedal released.

If the noise is present with the pedal released and follows engine speed, its a release (throw-out) bearing. If it follows vehicle speed, its internal to the trans.

the noise happens when the I let the clutch pedal out. If the car is sitting still I can push the clutch pedal in and it idles with no noise. If I let the pedal out, its makes the grinding noise. I pushed the car to the shop yesterday and even with the clutch in, it makes the noise when the car is being pushed off and on, any ideas? Hopefully its not the transmission but I guess I will find out soon enough. If it is the tranny, I guess I did want a 5 speed instead of a 4 anyways....

that sucks. I had a relative brake down in 300 miles from home and he did a pay by the week apartment and now 5 years later he still lives in that town. Better job and a house but still he says he kind of got stuck there and the rest is history

Sounds like mine did ,clutch in as I was rolling and downshifting with the clutch in the noise increased with the speed of the car/trans it was a bearing/bearings EXPENSIVE if you chose to have a shop do it, good luck with a junkyard tranny unless it's low miles
