  • 94 Aspire tranny noise

I have a 94 Aspire with a 5 speed. The transmission makes a loud growling noise at speeds of 15 or higher. The noise is constant in all gears and pushing in the clutch makes no difference. It gets louder the faster I go and drowns out the radio.

I have ruled out the front wheel bearings and throw out bearing. When jacked up and test driven in the air, it is definitely the tranny. I changed the tranny fluid and it did no good.

Any ideas? Is the tranny toast?

It is only while the car is in motion and begins to be noticeable at 15 mph. Pressing in the clutch makes no difference; the noise is still there. It gets louder the faster you go above 15 mph. At highway speeds, the radio doesn't drown it out anymore. LOL When I am stopped, there is no noise at all whether the clutch is pushed in or not. When it was in the air and in gear, I could tell it was coming from the transmission, although I could not pinpoint a specific area of the tranny.

Had you removed the axles and reinstalled them?

Are the axles not all the way up in the trans?

They could appear to fit all the way, but not.

        This could cause noise.

        Check your trans fluid.

The synchronizes could be out of place from hard shifting or bad bushings in your shift linkage.

Got a couple cars in the past that made noise and Reverse was like first gear and so on.

Put the trans in neutral and shifted it into a few gears and it started to work correct.
Has last for several years with no problem.

I checked the drive axles going in. The fluid is all new and full. I fear it may be toast.
