  • Rear brakes/ Reverse-thread hub nut

I am redoing the rear brakes on my 1989 Festiva.

I got the drivers side done with no problems.

On the passenger side, I took my impact wrench and tried to loosen the nut. It wouldn't budge. I thought it was just seized up so I kept trying and it finally came off but stripped the nut in the process.

I bought a new "standard thread" lock nut and tried using it. Still not going on...

I tried to file down the threads on the spindle, still no luck. I finally realized that the threads were reversed and now I have some damage to the spindle from filing.

Does anybody have a suggestion or a replacement spindle?

I am going to return the standard nut at NAPA for the reverse threaded one tomorrow. I hope I don't need a new spindle, but I may. How much are those?

Advance auto parts has both the reverse and standard nuts for 3.99 each here in NC.

Auto zone here has to order and they charge 9.99 each

You can use the spindle from the driver side if needed with the standard nut.

Advance link to spindle nut below.

            Member TonyCash has used spindles.

              Fixed

I went to Advance and got the correct spindle nut for $4.00. It went right on with no problems. What a pain in the neck!

Thanks guys for all your help!

had the same issue, previous owners repair tack welded a donor spindle nut on to the axle. only diagnosed this trying to adjust handbrake/drum. could be worse.
