I am assuming there is a pump of some sort. I am not sure where it is, or how hard it would be to replace. I thought my DD was low on fluid, so I put a half bottle of anti-freeze washer fluid in, and it still won't squirt out! Is this a common problem? Is it more likely the switch? Thanks for any help you can give me.

Yes, at least on mine ('88), the pump is built into the reservoir. I had the same problem, went to Pick-a-part, got a good used one for $5. Works great, takes like 5 minutes to install.
Are you sure there's no obstruction in the line, or the line isn't pinched shut?

Yes, the pump is attached to the reservoir behind a plastic cover in the driver's side wheel well. Mine is dead AND leaking, but I haven't gotten the old one out yet, because most of the bolts have rusted to oblivion, and I'm not even sure what I have to remove. Bolts and brackets in the way of other bolts, things like that...

Yep, it's in the bottom of the tank. Like they said. Theoretically possible just to change the pump, but much easier just to lay hands on a new tank and swap the whole thing out. Assuming here that your wipers still work, so that eliminates a fuse. Did you verify that the hose is connected on both ends, and not kinked? An old caravan I ended up with had a habit of the hose coming off the pump, so when I'd hit the washer switch, it would just squirt washer fluid all over the engine bay.
And Schildir, yours is an 89 like mine, shouldn't be any brackets to remove. Just remove the two bolts at the top that hold the plastic top tabs in place, pull it out, disco the electrical connection and pull the end of the hose off. Shouldn't be any brackets in the way of other bolts. Assuming yours is the same as mine.Last edited by batstiva; 11-24-2009, 04:51 PM.

OK, I will have to see what a PITA it will be to get it out. The one in my parts car may be good, I will have to check. Also, my DS wiper doesn't get anywhere near the edge of the window. The PO had huge wipers on there and they were shot, so I replaced them with shorter ones(OE spec), and they seem to get maybe 4" from the DS edge. The old ones got within an inch or so.The normal is not always normal... MOST is not ALL... And any job can be hard if you don't have the right tools!!!

Hmm, think mine are 18" IIRC, and they pretty much go right up to within an inch the edge of the glass.

i've changed this pump twice, first with jy, then with new... it turned out to be corroded wiring between the pump and harness... easy for water to get in there if not properly sealed off. bit of a pita but a little penatrating oil on the nuts a few days b4 and some gumption- not a big job. my bro's was just clogged hose... air comp can test that, just remember, keep face away from washer res if you spray air in that direction... also have had the hood sprayer clogged. good idea is to clean out the tank b4 install and the hose isn't terrible to replace. i just used vacuum hose. if the pump is working you should be able to hear it hum with the engine off. hope you got it fixed alreadylight a man a fire and he'll stay warm for the night.

On my '89 the windshield washer reservoir (it's a French word) is on the passenger's side. The engine coolant reservoir is on the driver's side.Original owner of silver grey carburetted 1989 Festiva. 105k km as of June 2006. 140k km as of June 2021.
