I think this is a "feature" on the 88's (my 88 L does this on both doors). Perhaps one of your doors and/or lock mechanism has been replaced with something from a different year car?
Not sure if the '89s doors/locks are supposed to be the same as the 88's or not.
The only ways I can lock my 88's doors from the outside are:
a) with the key
b) push the lock button down then hold the outside door handle UP while shutting the door
I always use the key method with my car,for the fact that when I try "Method b)", the internal locking rods get crossed over & stuck on each other & I have a huge ordeal unlocking the door.
Yea, they did that for a couple years. Hold handle in "up" position when closing door and it will remain locked. I know, its retarded.

My '89 is the same way. I was told a lot of older cars were like that. Holding the handle up while closing it has always worked for me.
The normal is not always normal... MOST is not ALL... And any job can be hard if you don't have the right tools!!! My Fleet:
89 L 4spd (Daily Driver(if it isn't broke down)) "Spanky"
Most all cars had that in middle 80's. Was to be a safety thing. Supposed to keep from locking keys in it or something. Still retarded, and i'd like to disconnect it.

Seems to follow no pattern which car got what. It makes you wonder just how many parts bins got emptied in Japan when this car was built. It reminds me of American Motors.

I though all Festivas were that way. The two I've owned (both '88s) were like that.

Sounds like the rear spindles... some later models have holes, cotter pins & castellated nut covers... but just as many do not.
