  • Excessive fuel consumption...and gas gauge problem...

My gas mileage in the Festiva has slowly been getting worse and worse, down to about 320km/tank right now. I dunno what the issue is, the mechanical side of things is fine, compression, leakdown, etc. Any suggestions on how to check and what to check, my diagnostic skills are pretty rusty at the moment from working on nothing but new cars for the last year.

And the gas gauge in this car, it drives me insane. When I got the car, it worked for one tank of gas then died. The sending unit was faulty. There was no way I was paying over $300 for a new one, so I bought a parts car mainly for the sending unit. It worked, but the gauge wouldnt go below half a tank. Problem was that the float was hitting the baffles in the tank and not dropping all the way, so I knock the baffles out of the way. Seemed to be working normal, got down to a 1/4 tank and then ran out of gas. Then for a while it wouldnt drop below half again, now its pegged at 0, occasionally the needle jumps up. Checked wiring, checked this, checked that, I'm ready to call it quits on having an accurate gas gauge.

contact TONYCASH, he may have some set ups left that will get you dialed in.

Not sure about the mileage though, are you sure you are not running rich or that the return line is not plugged? Oxygen sensor...cat clogged? Not sure what kilometers converts to in miles, also...list your location in your profile...never know who may be close and could help out.

320 KM = 198 miles. Slowly getting worse and worse sounds like a clogged cat to me. Of course, it might just need a good tuneup.
If you have a tach cluster, you can use the tripmeter as a gas gauge. Maybe keep a gallon of gas in the trunk just in case.

simple circuit, the sender unit is a resistor and the gauge is a mili volt meter, the sender is grounded via the resistor, you should be able to check the sender with an ohm meter and as you move the slide the resistance should change

Maybe I'll sawzall the cat outta one of the parts cars tommorow and weld it in the the black Festiva Tuesday. I checked the resistance on the sending unit before I put it the last time I had it out, seemed fine. I keep my GPS in my car and use it as my trip meter, its been getting lower and lower, I used to pull 500-550km/tank.

clogged cat will present itself with a loss of power and then limited top speed (like 60kph top speed).

Clogged cat (exhaust) would also show up on a vacuum guage. Look for the vacuum guage link at the top of the forum page to see how to check.
