  • Need Transmission Advice- 91 5pd festiva

So my fourth gear went...I knew it had something to do with not topping up the transmission fluid. I added the fluid and 1,2,3,5 gears worked, but still had the metal grinding sound, which diminished when the cluth was engaged. I have a feeling that the problem is I went to long without adding gear oil, and the teeth on the bearings are worn out. I went on ebay and found some transmission bearings (http://cgi.ebay.ca/1988-93-Ford-Fest...item5636ad7abb) and was wondering if this would be an appropriate route to take? Or, is the tranny beyond salvagable and I should cut my losses and install a new 5 spd tranny???? Help, please!

Depends on your budget and mechanical expertise If I were replacing the trans I definitely would go to the 5 speed. You should get better gas mileage. Plus there is the chance that there is more damage than just bearings alone would repair. Possible damaged gears would make the replacement a no brainer for me, cost wise.
( I did replace the trans in my 1990 in August along with the motor)
Also might be a good excuse to do a B6/8 swap if you want.
    Just my 2 cents worth
