  • bp with egr valve

Does anybody know if the bp engine from an Escort gt has an egr valve? A mechanic friend of mine tells me that most b series mazdas from this era do not. Texas is getting pretty strict on emissions and would not pass my car because my b6 (from a 93' 323) did not have one. I would someday like to but a bp in my car and it would be nice if it would pass emissions legally. My 90' Festy came with one on the b3 and since the Escort is also a Ford I thought maybe it would also come with one. I looked in the search for an answer but didnt find anything. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

no Aspire motor, because my dad bought the car new in 1990. The first motor swap was the b6e in July of last year. I will double check on the b3 having one but that is what the mechanic told me. He showed me on his all-data print out where the Festy had one but the 93 323 did not .Thanks

I put a brand new magnaflo high flo cat and a cherrybomb muffler on it and the nox was over double the allowable limit. My b6e turned out to be a pretty worn motor that burned a quart of oil about every 400 miles. Think maybe that could cause it to fail the nox test? My b6me is in a lot better shape though. Should I put my oem cat back on for emissions testing?

High oil consumption would give you high HC results.
High NOX generally is a result of a contaminated or deactivated Cat or your AF ratio is running lean and raising peak combustion temps and producing high NOX readings.
What do your plugs look like?
I guess could be a bad O2 sensor too.
              How does it run?

with my b6e the #1 plug would foul about every 2000 miles. It would build up so bad that there would not even be a gap at all. I would change the plug and it would run great for about another 2000 miles and start missing again. My b6me doesn't foul plugs at all and as far as using oil I am changing the oil today at 4000 miles and it is a 1/2 quart low. I am not due an inspection until June so maybe this healthier motor will pass. It runs a little rich for the first couple of minutes but runs great after that. Thanks

I forgot to mention that I got about 38 mpg with that motor so I would think that the o2 sensor should be ok.

to answer the first Q, BP engines have NO egr provision.

Yeah, I would tend to agree!
So what do the other plugs look like.
I would have though that burning oil, even a small amount, would have jacked the HC's way up and your NOX would have been fine.

Ok at 15mph my hc read 273 and 245 is standard. fail. My nox read 3391 and standard is 1944. fail. At 25mph my hc read 267 and standard is 239. fail. My nox read 3165 and standard is 1774. fail. My CO, CO2, O2 and dilution all passed. Could it be possible that a high flow cat/muffler setup with 2" exaust all the way back doesnt restrict airflow enough to allow the cat to do its job? just a thought.

BTW thanks Festyboy for the BP answer. I guess it doesnt matter which I find Mazda or Ford donor car. Cool, doubles my chances of finding a healthy motor.

PU241, the other 3 plugs looked good. The engine also had 140+ lbs of compression on 3 cylinders and 120 on # 4.

one plug misfiring can cause those numbers, and dirty valves/leaking valve seals.
