  • tranny wont engage in any gears

was driving to work desmorning and out of nowhere while i was driving 105km/h it started to rev like it was in Neutral and the car slowly crawled to a stop and refused to go into any gear 1st through 5th. couldnt find anything in the search that would help but got some idea what to look at. gonna drive out to my car and see if i can get it into gear before i decide to tow it home.

You'll have to wedge something under the clutch pedal to engage the cutoff switch.

If it went out while just driving along, not while shifting, it sounds like the clutch is gone.
Just before this happened, maybe earlier in the day, did you ever feel it rev up after it was already in gear and maybe thought it was because you were on ice or snow?

Hello - My son had something like this happen. It felt like it was locked in Neutral (wouldn't even go out from the neutral position)- If that is your problem, I was able to get it working again by shoving it hard to the 5th/Rev side and while wiggling it up and back. Eventually I heard a click and shifter would move thru all the gears. It has been working fine for a couple of weeks now. If you are able to put the shifter in the gear position then it wouldn't be this problem - but most likely a clutch issue. Good Luck

went out to my festiva today to try and get it going didnt crawl under and look at anything as it doesnt do me anygood since i have no clue what does what or where... but i let it warm up for 20 minutes, then tried to rev it hard with it in 4th gear and the clutch depressed, same with third gear, couldnt get the clutch to unstick if it is stuck... but if i start it with the clutch depressed in any gear and let go of the clutch it doesnt die like its supposed to it just keeps running like its in neutral, when i rev the engine it feels like the tranny is running in gears but the car just isnt going anywhere. also there was a crapload of black stuff coming out of the back end of my tailpipe carbon deposits im guessing, they were large chunks and there was ALOT. while im in the help forum ill also make note that while ive been driving it.. i havent been able to get it over 105 km/h in 4th or 5th gear i just assumed this car could only go that fast and went with it. 105 km/h with the pedal to the floor. i was proven wrong when i read somewhere that the festiva tops out at 160km/h didnt know these things could go that fast stock =P.

just got it out of the shop a week ago got a new clutch kit put in, runs fine now. the speedometer didnt work when i got it back they said it was a console side issue, spent a week tearing apart the console, taking out the speedo gear, turns out the cable wasnt in the sleeve properly got it working good now and back on the road get some gas in it on payday and it will be my daily driver woot. would have taken it back and made them fix the speedo for me but they gave me a hell of a deal, 450$ including a tow to the shop for the clutch job, they replaced the distributor cleaned up the engine bay, gave me new battery cables and zip tied all the cables out of the way all nice and neat like i was very happy with their work .
