I believe they do match the VIN.

You are both correct.I just looked at my list of VINS.The first matches the VIN for a 5spd.90 I had.I don't have the VIN listed for the other one,but,knowing the first one is the 5spd,I know the other is a 4 speed.Thanks guys.!!!

^ That's not a 4, it's a * (star) just like the one at the end of the number. Those numbers are the last part of the VIN of the car the trans was originaly in.
The L = 1990
The M = 1991

Either way, it would be a 5-speed. If both those numbers are on different parts of the same case, then they must have used two different trans to make one good one.

J = 4 or 5 speed 1988 car
K = 5 speed 1989 car
L = 5 speed 1990 car
M =5 speed 1991 car
N= 5 speed 1992 car
0= 5 speed 1993 car

Don't know where or if vins are on automatic.

Never checked for one.

Got it Tony,

Was just was posting you the link from some time ago that would tell you that the last seven numbers on the trans are the last seven numbers from the car vin the trans they come from.

Also the alphabet letter tells you the year of trans.
