  • STILL not starting!! Help!

Ok, I am realllly getting frustrated and quite depressed about this non-starting issue ('88 festiva), because I can't go look for a job without a car, and it's been 3 weeks.

(see my other thread on this too)

Ok, all signals point to the ignition module, which I or my mechanic have replaced 3 times, with no luck. Coil was weak, new one installed, and still no start. battery is good. test showed that the ignition switch is also good.

Could the fusible links in the engine compartment be causing this? Are there other fuses someplace that could have blown???

I have a good used disty coming, but could my entire distributor be bad? How can the whole thing go bad???

Might check the fusable links, I replaced mine with the cartriges, just because the wires looked really bad. Some guys run 20-30-20 or 30-40-30.

Are you sure the new coil is good?

Okay, the dizzy is on its way. Curious. You swapped the coils. Where do you, and more importantly where do you not have juice? Voltage from the coil getting to the dizzy? From there to the plugs? Assuming since you have been focused on the electronics, that fuel/air is not an issue, correct?

The starting motor cranks the engine but there is no spark? If so it's pretty much a process of elimination on the ignition components, most of which can be tested with a cheap mulitmeter. A basic auto mechanics book from the public library would describe the ignition system tests. Considering you've lot 3 weeks potential income the cost of a mulitmeter seems small. I've seen them as low as $10 and they last a lifetime. I have an old analogue one I got at a rummage sale for 25 cents and have got good value out of it.

The whole thing is out of my hands now, because it's at my brother's mechanic.

Just got off the phone with him, I wanted to know what kind of tests he did.

He said he ran some electrical tests, and said the problem is the pickup coil in the distributor. something I would never have even thought about. The new (used) disty I have coming should take care of everything (I hope!).

When I do get the car back I'm going to replace the main fusible links. They're 21 years old... may as well get new ones

Hopefully this will get you up and running. The dizzy came from a good running car that was structurally not worth saving.

Make sure you take note of the sexy pink duct tape (Why the hell do I even have pink duct tape???) holding the box shut.

Just thought I'd pass along an update. His mechanic swapped the dizzy, coil, and plugs, and he's up and running. :headbang:

So what is Pink duct tape used for, or is this only available in San Francisco and I really don't want to know what its for?
