  • has anyone actually rebuilt a festiva carb? got a problem

    yo

so has anyone actually rebuilt their fastiva carb?

i'm thinking of tackling it....hope it's not too crazy

my car is "surging" for lack of better term at partial throttle ...usually when the car is hot [usually to the already high rev's on cold starts]...in all gears

worse is, say starting out from a stop it will completely cut out and kick back in....pain in the ass!

plugs read really well...already did a full tuneup [plugs/wires/cap/rotor/air filter] timing is bang on ...i've put a can of cleaner down the carb....

    any help would be great

yes, I've rebuilt mine. I'd say it was easy, but I'm somewhat biased, since I've worked on autos proffesionally for the past 11 years. Its really not that bad. The worst part is the vacuum hoses. get yourself some masking tape, a label maker, etc., and mark EVERY hose and connection with a number or letter. Carefully remove the carb, because everything is brittle from age, especially the carb baseplate/EFE heater. After that, its a cakewalk. Remove the 6 or so screws from the top plate, and almost everything you need to do is right there. Last bit of advice.... make sure everything is surgically clean before you reassemble. That can the difference between a confidence building experience and sheer anger and hatred.

ok, will a rebuild kit come with everything i will need? or is there something extra i should/will need to complete the job [cleaners aside]

sounds like a simple job..i've rebuilt motorcycle carbs before....they are a cinch ....

should be a couple hour job no?

      thanks

well, its no mikuni. those are childishly simple, but this Aisan carb isn't too much more difficult. get an extra baseplate gasket for below the EFE heater, soak all gaskets with carb cleaner before attempting to remove the residue, and use a razorblade to GENTLY scrape the residue off.

I'm no mechanic, but I'm learning.

I tried to rebuild my Aisen carb, but I couldn't get it all the way apart. I had the rebuild kit. I had an impact driver. Some of the screws were just too stuck to get loose. When I used the impact driver, they began deforming they were so soft! I gave up and got another carb off ebay.

I still haven't gotten my '89L fixed up enough to drive yet. It runs, but not too well when it acts up unexpectedly.

However, if you've rebuilt other carbs, give it a try.

Sorry I'm late, Aithen. I think I got it at NAPA or Advance. I can't recall but I think A-Zone didn't have it.

I recently rebuilt my carb, it was fairly easy. I took a lot of pics, thankfully, cause I forgot how a few linkages went. Make sure you thoroughly label your vacuum lines. The rebuild kit cost about $35 but it came with everything. I could not for the life of me remove the brass "jet" where the needle valve goes and it got slightly chipped, but after putting the carb back together, it ran like a new car. I wish I had soaked it in carb cleaner a full day instead of only 12 hours, just to remove more stuff. I have lots of pics of hoses and linkages if you need me to send you any.
