I got all up under my car today, and noticed something that bothers me a great deal, and I'm wondering if I might as well not have a frame under the car, but I would really like to know if this is something that needs to be repaired immediately. The rust is only in one place, about 10 inches from the front wheel wells on both sides. It looks pretty rough to me.

do you have or know someone with welding capabilities? a couple pieces side of reinforcement and then paint coated to protect.

Rust on a load bearing section is never really good. I'd blast all that out (got to get rid of the bad stuff or it'll rot the good stuff), shoot it with a weld through zinc primer, skin over it, and then lay down a good coat of paint to protect it. No biggy if you know a decent welder.
Edit: Can't tell from the pics but is it rusted through yet or is it just surface rust? At first I thought it was rusted through until I relazed that maybe the undercoat is flaking off making it look worse than it actually is.Last edited by Zanzer; 01-14-2010, 12:50 PM.

Looks to me like he's through the undercoat, and rusting steel. Could just be me tho.

What i would do is put the car on stands and put jacks on either side of the rusted area sothat the car wont "sag" then i would grind or sandblast all of the undercoating off around that area.
after that i would.
-cut out the old metal
-get new metal and rough up the surface
-spray it and the cars effected area with weld through primer
-weld the new metal in place (i would lap weld it)
-spray weld through primer again over the welds
-apply a spray-on undercoating
