  • Air Filter Housing

I want to check the air filter in my car, but I'm not really sure how to get to it...

I have AllData and it doesn't even mention an air filter in this vehicle.. lol

I assume the box up front on the passenger side with the MAP sensor and air tube is the filter housing. What screw(s) or other things do I remove to open it?
I tried the four phillps/hex screws, but I couldn't get two of them to come out- they just turned, but no other movement.

yeah it's those 4 screws....sounds like the little nut inserts are spinning...not sure if there's a way to hold them still

you'll need a 6" extension with a 10mm socket (also a philips screw driver will work) ... on all 4 sides of the housing... then disconnect the MAP sensor, and that whole top housing piece will come out to reveal the square air filter beneath.

Thank you. I thought I had it right.
@joebreck that's probably the issue... great...
Are the screws farther down on the box for removing the whole assembly from the vehicle?

yes....you could disconnect the hose and the plug and take it all the way out and take it apart then.

You can get the filter out by just removing the four screws.

I removed the air filter housing from the vehicle and noticed more damage from when the previous owner hit a deer.
The hood, fender, grille, and radiator crossmember are now on the replacement list.
Anyway, I found out that the screws were just spinning. The air filter housing was damaged as well.
Part of the cover is missing, meaning the car is sucking in un-filtered air.

I was going to attach a generic cone filter to the intake tube, then remembered the air flow sensor. I tired starting the car with no intake/etc and the air flow sensor just sitting there. It sputtered and died. So I need to include this in the air intake system.
Do you have any ideas for an aftermarket filter to attach to this?:

I don't like stock air boxes. They're restrictive and a pain to remove.
It would probably be more expensive to locate one from a parts store or junkyard than to fab an aftermarket kludge.

they do sell an adapter, or they used to, on ebay. i bought one back in the day. it bolted on where those 4 bolts attach to the VAF. I think a bunch of guys use them on here to put on cones. but then again, i havent seen them on ebay in a while

I browsed through all 45 pages that came up with a search for "festiva."
Didn't see any kind of VAF filter adapter.
If a member on here has something like what joebreck is talking about, I'd really appreciate pictures. I might be able to make one or something like it.

I know that it is kinda off topic as to what you guys are looking for but everything I have heard from this website is that the cold air filters are kind of a joke (I don't know that is just what I read, and I like their looks too ). But one thing that I did find that seems interesting and a cheap mpg and hp boost is this thread, towards the bottom about the pvc piping.

Thats an interesting idea, but my stock air box is broken.
I want to do like the poster did in his first pic- attach an aftermarket cone filter to the VAF.
