  • O2 Sensor wire

I have started to discuss this in other thread when I realized I should start a new one because the other thread had nothing to do with the O2 Sensor. I need help in figuring out how to wire my O2 Sensor. Yeah I know just plug it in DA. Well my check engine light came on and it turned out to be code 15. So I checked my O2 sensor and it is good. However, the wire coming from the car to the O2 sensor was spliced before and that wire was rubbing againest metal which eventually esposed bare wire. So I figured I would splice it like the owner before me did. Keep in mind I have had the car for probably a year to a year and a half and the code just appeared. So while I was splicing the wire (The one coming off of the car) I noticed that the wire had a wire within. I fugured the last guy spliced it and it worked fine but now my check engine light is still on. So I was wondering is there a certain way to splice the wire. Below (if it works) is a diagram I drew to explain what I am talking about the wire that I spliced.

The break in the wire is before the connectors. I hope this may clarify in case some of you wondering.

Okay, in looking at your diagram it appears the wiring is similar to coaxial cable. In which case the outer wires are for grounding and shielding purposes ( Atleast, that's how it is with catv lines) If the outer wiring is rubbed bare and touching metal, you will have an issue. If the outer wiring is touching the center wire, you will also have problems. Not sure how you would go about splicing that. The only O2 sensor I've replaced was just from O2 sensor to connector.

True, yet also baffles me is how would that outer wire ground out? The O2 sensor has a single thin wire coming off of it that goes into the connector. It is no near as thick as the one going into the connector from the car. I tried looking at the wiring schematic in my haynes manual, but it dident help me out much.

          I am confused now...
you will probably be better off getting a new one if the above poster's answer did not work. Just be glad it is a single wire, less expensive one.

the shielding wire should be grounded, and is in most cases but not on our o2 sensor wire.

Someone already told me that the outer wire is to prevent interference with the radio. So I fixed my splice job and cleared out the check engine light code. So far the code has not come back yet. Although the check engine light is on again. I gotta check the codes list to see what is wrong with it now. Thanks for everyones help.

Well now I think I have another issue. The code I got is a seven or I think it is. However there is no code seven on any check engine light code list. When I check the code my check engine light blinks seven times slow and thats it. So any help is appreciated.

Nevermind I figured out the code. It is more than likely code 70 which is a vaccum switch. Which now I get try and figure out which one. Never dealt with a vaccum system before so we will see.

maybe something like that but differnt.
most likely to keep intergerence off that senser wire. the 02 sensor is like a generator of sorts. it makes electricity, tiny little bits of electricity. The computer reads the amount electricity being made and adjusts the alount of fuel delivery.

I forgot what car you ahve , but if it is single wire sensor then I would not wait for a code think the sensor may be faulty. They are delicate. dont touch or contaminate the tip when you change it.
