  • Speedo cable question

My speedo cable just broke and im having trouble locating a new one. I have an 89 LX with a 5 speed, but when i go the parts stores they only show them for a 4 speed. Are the 4 and 5 speed the same cable? Does anyone know of an online vendor that sells them? I looked thru the archives and the vendors but didnt see anything.

    Thanks

They are the same. Around here, Advance auto parts can order them, and have them in a couple of days.

If you can not find one, let me know, and I can order one for you.

            cable lube

I ordered and recieved the cable. Does not appear to have any lube on it, should i lube the cable prior to install. If so, what lube should i use?

            Thanks

I would lube it, I would use just about any kind of grease, you could probably use vasline if you needed to.

When I ordered mine, it came wth a tube of grease with it. FWIW: Use it generously.

*update* FWIW just wanted to let everyone know that the cable p/n listed for the 4 speed does fit on the 5 speed. It was approx an 1" longer and required a bit of a reroute to keep it from being pushed into a wierd angle. The cable was a Dorman from Advance Auto, p/n 03265.

                    Thanks for all the advice

Just to reiterate, Ford FSM (factory service manual)calls out the same cable regardless if a 4 or 5 speed transaxle. they make no differentiation between the two as well.
