highway vibration

    highway vibration

    the car runs perfectly smooth until about 65. then it starts to vibrate. but not continuously, it vibrates for a second, then goes away for a seceond, on and off. its not terrible, but sorta annoying cause it shakes the steering wheel.

    it doesnt become more violent with speed, but the vibration happens at quicker intervals the faster i go.


    any ideas?

    could be the condition or ur tires. how bad does it vibrate?. my aspire does the same thing at 65 but thats from coming in contact with a curb on the ice

      could also be a slightly bent rim, or ice build up in the suspension or wheels

        Most likely tires. I had the same issue, and when I installed new tires it went away.

        Could be one of your tires lost a balancing weight.

          Bad tire with a bulge, or just out of balance. If the steering wheel shakes, it will be one or both in front out of balance. If it vibrates the car without shaking the wheel, it will be in back. Best to have them all checked for balance, which will also show any bulges while being spin balanced. Can also jack suspect tire(s) up and spin them to check for a bulge.

            im gonna throw some different wheels on today. hopefully they will fit. if they dont i will rotate the tires and see what happens.

            it didnt really seem like the tires to me cause they rotate so much faster than this. it literally goes away for a second and then comes back for a second then goes away and then comes back.

            think of your phone on vibrate when it is ringing..... vvvvvvvtt......................vvvvvvvvvtt........ ..................vvvvvvvvtt. except no a phone vibrating... a shaking of the car...

              What you are describing is what I was feeling the other day when I was driving, only I think a little more violently than you. And here's what I found.





              Smooth sailing now. Double check your tires/rims/wheel balance.

                I had the same issue with a set of 15" rims. One had the slightest bend in the inner flange from infamous Michigan PotHoles. The guy balancing them showed me the zeroed-out balance but spun it again to demonstrate the bend. You couldn't see any variance in the tire, itself, but under load it transfers to the car. It was about 2mm or less than .1" but relegated that wheel to rear position duty, only. We spun the tire on the rim about 60 deg. one time to minimize the amount of weight and the overall effect, too.

                The change from on & off again depends on how the variable pitched tread is oriented to the flaw. All tires have their tread blocks vary in size to avoid a resonance, you have had something change to put a resonant frequency back into the wheel/tire system.

                Light cars w/light tires are extra sensitive to the slightest change, too.

                  it'sa combination of imbalance and tired shocks... you can balance the tires, but that will only last about 6 mos. on PA roads. so the long term fix is new struts and rebalance about every 10k or so.
                  Trees aren't kind to me...

                    yeah as for the vibration im experiencing in my car at 65, i just checked it out and my right front is bent slightly so you may check to see if any of ur wheels are bent
