  • 1.6l FI Engine Re-Build Problem.

I finally got around to drop the engine in last week and I got everything hooked up.

I was able to get it started and the timing seems to be right but the front end was leaking oil and it seemed to be coming from the front main crank seal.

The seal that came in my kit was wrong, it was for the cam shaft and the original looked fine so I re-used it.

But once I had the leak I was sorry I did.

So I tore the front end down and replace checked the seal, it was loose.

I already had a new seal so I replaced it and re-assembled the engine and fired it up.

It ran great for about 3 minutes and then the it started to leak again.

Does anyone know if this is a normal problem?

Is it possible that I have the seal in backwards? Once it was installed the flat side was facing out and the U channel with the spring was facing in.

Is it possible that is wasn't seated right?

Any help I can get would be appreciated.

    Thanks

The flat side is out and the spring faces in. I had one that leaked when I bought it. I changed the seal and the new one leaked. It turned out that my crank had a slight groove in it. The oil was getting past it. I ended up buying a seal and crank repair kit. It comes with a seal and a very thin sleeve and a sleeve install tool. I installed the sleeve and seal and no more leaks.

Sounds like that's what I need to do.

Where did you get the kit?

I got mine from advance auto parts.

Also when I put the sleeve on I used my timing belt pulley to push it on.

i had that problem on my b3...went through 3 crank seals before the shop polished the crank where the seal was leaking. not a problem since. at first i thought the shop was just ordering the wrong seal since the b3 in my 89 is from a 95 aspire...but i guess it just needed a little smoothing out.

I took everything off and checked the surface where the seal rides and it does not seem to be scored or damaged in any way.

However, there seems to be a shoulder at the very back of the shaft, is that normal?

Does anyone know the best way to seat the seal?
