Aspire running out of gas

I nearly ran out of gas today... the engine started losing power intermittantly depending on my like, position. I jammed the clutch in and coasted off the freeway and into a gas station.

Engine never stalled, but I was able to put 9.5 gallons in it. How much damage could I have done by letting it get this low?

I should also mention that it did act fine after i put gas in it, but i've always read that letting it get too low can damage the fuel pump

it just takes a little life off of your pump and puts more of the crap off the bottom of your tank into your sock

I've ran out of gas at least 5 times due to a partially defective fuel gauge.

Haven't seen any side effects yet though, although it is very hard on the fuel pump.

excellent. My car has enough wrong with it to begin with so I don't need to be replacin the fuel pump
