I've used Mobil 1 gear oil in my '90 Festiva for 120,000 miles with no problem. If I recall correctly, the original Mazda designers specified gear oil and that is what is found in the 323. But Ford switched it to ATX fluid.
My guess - the change was made because they only wanted the Festiva for the effect its good mileage would have on their fleet-wide fuel economy results. Festivas brought their average up and allowed them to sell more of their expensive, over powered trucks and SUVs. Short term geniuses; long term fools.

Mobile 1 synthetic atf or red line synthetic, especially if you live in a "winter" prone state like Michigan. Make sure your seals are fresh while you've got it out.Last edited by iceracerdude; 03-11-2010, 08:46 AM.

I'm cautious of the Lucas additives or full synthetic gear lubes.
Here is an interesting test on the subject...........................
