ok guys what do you guys recommend for trans oil? any brands you guys like or dis like just got done changing out the flywheel and clutch and want to put some good oil any info would be great

Transmission fluid should be Dexron/Mercon III or atf mercon V

I've used Mobil 1 gear oil in my '90 Festiva for 120,000 miles with no problem. If I recall correctly, the original Mazda designers specified gear oil and that is what is found in the 323. But Ford switched it to ATX fluid.
My guess - the change was made because they only wanted the Festiva for the effect its good mileage would have on their fleet-wide fuel economy results. Festivas brought their average up and allowed them to sell more of their expensive, over powered trucks and SUVs. Short term geniuses; long term fools.

Funny the Festy manual calls for ATF and the Mazda 121 calls for gear oil. I have tried both and I like ATF better, some how I feel the car more loose, may be is just me.Comment

i use gear lube and the best one is lucas or royal purple and it does work my brother did this on his festiva he just got 1990 festiva lxFORD BUILT TOUGH SINCE 1987-1993 FORD FESTIVA LXComment

I'm cautious of the Lucas additives or full synthetic gear lubes.
Here is an interesting test on the subject...........................
