  • ...how bout those bearings?

Can anything be done to smooth out or replace the races for the front wheel bearings on my '91 without having to replace the entire knuckle/spindle?

The bearing races are pressed or driven into the hub. You can remove them with a brass punch and a hammer or a steel punch if you are very careful. Unless you actually spun the race in the hub, there is no reason to replace the hub. My tool of choice for a punch was an old (no guarantee) Asian ratchet. I cut the head off the ratchet and ground the end where I cut the head off nice and flat. The bearing races are harder than the ratchet handle and after a few uses I re-grind the end flat and smooth again.
    You gonna race that thing?

My machinist only charged me $30 to do new bearings in both knuckles. I didn't wanna bother with them, with the way our hubs are set up.

The races should be done when the bearings are done. There should be no reason to replace the hubs. Unless you are in a hurry, and have a spare car to take one from. I swapped hubs on mine before heading to NC, but only because that was quicker than pulling the hub and taking it somewhere. The shops here were all backed up, and I would not have gotten the hub back in time to get going.
