Clutch adjusting

Ok so I installed a new clutch and thought it was fine but my dad drove my car today and said it needs some adjustment so where is it suppose ti start catching the gear?? Right now mine catches near the top so when I press it all the way in I come up about half way before it starts to take off it's an 88 4 speed any info would be great thanks

When you are not touching the clutch pedal, the clutch disk is in contact with the flywheel. When you press the clutch pedal, you are separating the clutch disk from the flywheel.

Your pedal should have some free play.

I know in mid 80's Hondas there was supposed to be a few mm of play in the clutch linkage. I don't know enough about the Festivas yet, but I'm working on it. I have always liked my clutches to engage and disengage somewhere near the middle of the pedal or closer to the top. Just remember, if you tighten up the linkage too much it can cause problems. I once saw an over adjusted mechanical clutch linkage push the throwout bearing all the way through the clutch diaphragm fingers. It was pretty funny, but slightly expensive for the owner.

FYI the manual for my 92 says that the pedal height (from the middle of the pedal to the firewall) should be between 8.2-8.4 inches. The free play should be between 0.35 to 0.59 inches.

Your dad has apparently driven enough manual transmissions to know the "feel". Where the clutch cable attaches to the clutch fork, there are threads on the end of the cable/bolt. Try unscrewing the adjusting nut about 2 complete turns and then let your dad drive it again. He can tell you when you have it about right.
