  • "Burping" coolant in car? "Bubble" in s

I searched for these terms and didn't find anything.

I'm looking for anything on how to handle a possible "bubble" in my coolant system after my engine swap.

Isn't there a procedure to "burp" the coolant so it doesn't come out the overflow tank?

I'm not sure I'll continue to have this happen, but I want to be prepared since I'm finishing up my car today (Tuesday). Does anyone remember this topic?

    Thanks,

    Karl

Air getting trapped shouldn't be a problem because the radiator tank is higher,(slightly) than the cooling jacket. But you could always drive her up on a set of ramps to elevate it even more and let the engine run and get good and warm. That should "burp" any air from the system.

Thanks for the suggestion, Don. I could lower my back end first and run her to see if that helps.

have you checked your radiator cap? to make sure it will hold pressures between 11 & 15 PSI.

I got a new cap to put on to make sure it isn't that.

Front wheels on and I'm getting ready to put her on the ground. At least the back end.

            Remove radiator cap
            Run engine for a bit
            Replace radiator cap

              Thanks Dan!

I may do that tomorrow. Today I had to add some because it was a bit low. So far no more leaking, so I think I'm okay.

Karl. it has to get hot enough for the tstat to open to purge any air in the system. running it with no cap will allow the coolant to expand to the point it will overflow (11 years of 3.8L Tauruses and Sables, getting air out of heater cores). with our little friends, its not necessary to make such a mess.

fill the rad, massage the upper rad hose (squeeze it a few times to purge any trapped bubbles), fill the overflow tank to the cold fill line, put the cap on, start it and let it run till the fan comes on. thats a great indicator the tstat has opened. shut it off, and let it coll for a few hours. if the overflow bottle is empty, remove the cap and top off the rad. if there's some coolant still in the bottle, just top off the bottle. done.

Just going by the instructions in the book.

I've always just filled it, drove it, then filled it back up.
