  • 88 not passing smog

well this was my free b project ive been working on, i have the prev tests that passed, my hc(ppm) is way above normal, i think max is 220 and it was at 338 at idle, it was way below max at 25mph tho so im confused, how can i reset the idle mixture screw to fix this and set the idle from the white screw thingy.. im pretty sure its running rich and thats why it wont pass.. it idles at about 930-950rpms with the idle adjust screw all the way off

on another note, does everyone else's idle go up with lights on, or rear defrost on??? lol it goes up to about 1500rpms at idle with any accessory on.. even the cooling fan does it..

    thanks for your help!

well im sure i need to adjust the idle mixture screw, i also tore the egr system apart this evening and started cleaning it, it was all completely clogged.. also i should mention i couldnt see any gas coming out of the jets on the carb but some how it was puddling on the open barrel's butterfly valve... the choked barrel seemed fine though...

yeah mine is a carbed 1.3.. took the egr stuff off the air breather and i also took the egr valve off and cleaned it all up with carb cleaner, the one thats on the passenger side intake manifold, that, the tube that unbolts off it and some of the vacuum lines right there were all clogged.. umm the cam vent hose doesnt have a filter in it and has alot of oil gettin in that way, could i just use steel wool??? i was thinkin of just doing a catch can im not racing it around or anything just dont want any oil gettin in.. sorry for all the random questions lol im young and i only know what ive learned on my own lol

the cam vent u can put a special rubber plug there or use a vent filter i changed my setup i put a t into the pcv valve so i have 2 pcv valves and engine runs really quit cause oil is lubing the engine and i can see it removed inner piece on valve cover to see plus i was lucky i also redid the carb bought a new one from autozone and swapped my old on out got it for $200 since i found it for cheap on another site also the new sending unit i have from korea works nice in the tank i will be selling them as soon as my shipment of 40 comes in

The EGR effects nitrogen levels. If it was clogged the car should have failed the nitrogen test. Hydrocarbon is often the catalitc converter (i.e. afterburner) or O2 sensor or both. I'd spray the carburettor with carb cleaner and clean the valves with an oil additive. Then I'd check the vacuum hoses because they effect air/fuel ratio once the engine warms up. The emission test is always done on a warmed up engine when the O2 sensor is working and the computer kicks in.

get some b12 carb cleaner from autozone put in a spray bottle and spry in the carb and get some through the brake booster hose to the carb so u can clean it this stuff works wonders i used it in my truck and the intake is clean i was amazed i gota post another youtube video of it its better then sea foam

ok thanks for all the tips guys, this one is gunna be a reader lol

i found some paper in the car this morning from a work repair done in 2008 i think thats when the car was parked last and not run since, says "it lacks power under hard throttle and was backfiring out the intake, duplicated failing CO at idle, scope check tested emissions, lowered idle speed to spec, 02 pegged high at idle, mixture control servo seemed sticky, injected signals to lean the mixture and servo worked fine, signals are present from controller too, the cat converter checked fine, the o2 checked fine, removed the CO plug and adjusted the idle mixture screw, now it will pass emissions, but driveability is poor "

so when i got it, it was backfiring out the intake and would barely move, i pulled the plugs and noticed 2 was dry 3 was wet, someone had the fire order going clockwise so i reversed it and i dont have any problems with backfiring or anything like that lol some people dont know how to pull a spark plug or something.. so i think i need to reset everything back to stock, what is a CO plug?? o i should mention the fast idle cam and the rod that goes up to the choke were gone off the carb when i got the car, i got one off a toyota and cut off the spacer part with my dremel and it fit perfect..

well i did some stuff.. adjusted the fast idle so now it only goes up to 950 and reg idle is at 750, i used some sea foam worked great for me car is running great no ticking sounds coming from the valves anymore i adjusted them to intake .008 and exhaust .010 instead of .012 cuz it was way clackety at stock clearance. adjusted the carb to run more lean and no more smoke at wide open throttle etc... anyways thanks for all the tips from everyone..
