My Festiva is fuel injected so I could easily be wrong.
But when I hear that an engine idles well but can't run above 35 in third gear or 45 in forth, I think fuel pump.
My Haynes manual says that can be checked by disconnecting the power to the primary of the coil and taking the fuel line to the carburetor off and holding it over a container while turning the engine over. "There should be a strong spurt of gasoline from the line on every second revolution."
"If little or no gasoline emerges from the line during engine cranking, either the fuel line is clogged or the fuel pump is not working properly."
How does the engine behave when, with car in neutral, you gradually increase rpm? Does it run well until it gets to a certain speed and then start missing? Describing that experience in detail would be helpful.
