Basically everything that would go into an EFI. Harness , gas tank etc. etc. etc.

What do you think could be making it back fire?

I would want to go back to the timing belt installation procedure and make sure the positions of the crankshaft and camshaft are perfectly aligned. Then, with the engine in that position, turn your distributor until the rotor points to the #1 terminal in the distributor cap. Then fine tune it with a timing light.

Back fires happen when you have a valve open at the wrong time when combustion takes place. Does your engine overheat to the degree that you could have some dieseling?

Could this be caused by a valve that doesn't completely close or is slow to close? Bent stem?

Sounds like you've given up on this engine. You may well be right to do so, but it, nevertheless, seems a shame to walk away without bothering to learn what is wrong with it.
