  • Grinding/abrasive sound in low gears

Hi - When I am revving up to change gears 1 thru 3, I hear a grinding/abrasive sound. It's on the right side of the car. If anyone knows what that might be, please share it with me. Also, I still get the check engine light when the car is idling at a stoplight, etc., but don't know if that has anything to do with it. Help!! My car is a 1988 Festiva. Phyl

Have you checked your alternator and/or belt?

Just a guess based upon revving and right side. I'm probably wrong.

How long has this been going on?

Thanks, Karl. Not long. My husband finally looked at it today. Says it's a rattle and may be the catalytic converter in the muffler system. So finally will get it fixed. Thanks again.
