Haven't seen this discussed before but would a large lock washer keep the spindle nut from backing off the spindle? Instead of bashing the collar into the key. Or would it not be enough pressure?

as long as there was a flat washer also so no damage to the parts.. i'm sure it would work. or you could loctite the nut.

You do need to seat them, but NOT "tighten down ..... quite a bit".
Procedure is on Page 1-31 of the Haynes manual.

Someone on here drilled a hole in the top of the nut once it was tightened and put a locking pin through it, into the spindle groove, as I understand it. That would keep it from backing off, though you would have to do that everytime you take the nut off unless you were lucky enough for alignment.Last edited by Breedlove; 05-06-2010, 06:06 PM.93 Festiva GL

i dont think im going to drill holes...i guess ill just do it the way it should be done lol. so it needs to be JUST tight enough to remove the wiggle in the wheel, thats where I messed up. The mechanic at my friends shop told me to leave a little wiggle in it so that the bearings have room to expand when they heat up....Tyler
