  • Coolant Temp Sending Unit wire plug...

I'm trying to get the plug off the coolant temp sending unit, but it doesn't want to come off and I can't figure out how to release it. There does not appear to be any "latch" mechanism to the plastic, but it won't pull off with moderate force.

Do I just use MORE force to get this plug off the sending unit; possibly with pliers?

Most plugs have "latches": something to squeeze together or pull apart to release the plug. This one seems not to have any way, and the shop manual just says to unplug it!

    Any ideas please?

Ha! I looked at my '93GL with B6 swap and it was the same part, so I just pulled it off. I then went back to my '92L and tried harder. Success! They just pull off, though Rockauto does show some different types of connectors for the same part.

I just need to do more finger exercises.

No, none of the coolant sensors use that type of retaining mechanism.
I believe the VAF wiring is retained that way and one other, which I do not recall.

Safety Guy, I assume you mean the "bullet" connector (got a pic?).
Check and see if it is corroded on the inside. Also, a good cleaning can increase the sensitivity and range of the output to your gage.

The parts stores really suck at getting the right part between that and the fan switch.

Yes, I could see the confusion!

John, I cleaned off the connection and maybe the temp needle is a little higher. Then again, the past day or so has been hotter!

Yesterday I removed, inspected and cleaned my plugs. I found the slow leak in my rr tire. Today I shall look at the front brakes and see if I can get rid of that scuffing noise.

Check the rotor shrouds, if you have ever run over anything largish, they often get distorted and will contact the rotor making the sound you indicated.

My machinist pounded my shrouds back on pretty good when he did my bearings but they came loose when I put them on my car, now I have zip ties holding them away from the rotors as best as I can but they still rattle... so irritating. Can you go without them?

No, you don't need them, they just help keep crap off the rotor.
In at least one case I know of they rusted so badly they fell off.

That sucks, anyway back to topic. With my b6t on my stock rad and xr2 condenser fan the gauge usually runs just into the normal range. However I noticed when I was idling once and it was pretty hot it was right in the middle when the fan actually kicked on. Seems like it shoulda been more into the hot side. Do you think the b6t gauge sender is the same as the b3 one or should I try cleaning up the connection a bit?

That is about where all my cars kick the fan on, so that is likely what the "Festiva" part of the car will cause. I have VERY rarely seen the guage on mine rise much over half on the guage, and that was in traffic with the A/C on with 90+ degrees high humidity.
Rust? Did you mention rust? I have run Winter cars without the shields. You do what you have to.......
