    Are they necessary?

I'm cleaning up some Aspire knuckles/hubs and I noticed the brake shields are rotted beyond use. Do I need them? I'm all set to do bearings this weekend and really don't want to wait.

Just my experience; my backing plates literally rusted away years ago, and the brakes still work fine. But I'm sure they're good to have intact.

cut them off they are pointless, your brakes will get better air flow without them.
