  • Grinding in the rear and now more probs

90 L 5 speed Festy grinds when you put on the brakes I took apart both sides and the shoes looked good ? I cleaned all the contact area's , shoes, cleaned all the junk out of the drums, lubed all the adjusters, packed the wheel bearings, and it still grinds in the rear when you apply the brakes sometimes worse than others, I never did get the adjusters to adjust up where I wanted them , but when you roll the wheel there is no noise . any ideas please . Doug
And the front brake are new and the rotors also ,it is definitely the rear

Now a new problem since yesterday as I was driving to work it seemed like the brakes were dragging ? , as I roll up to a stop light or the drive up at Mc Donalds the car does not seem to roll it want's to stop as if the brakes are on , this is when I am almost stopped I can feel it , then when I am almost there it starts pulling to the right when I apply ,gradually ,not abrupt like a front brake would ,Then when I am on my way home it's like it never happened ,I never changed anything in the rear just cleaned the junk out packed the bearings and put the nut back on where it was and locked it down , something really weird going on in the rear.

Is your emergency brake adjusted right? Could it be catching a little bit?

I was thinking parking brake too.

Also, how are your drum brake self adjusters? I had to flip my self adjuster on the Mutt once, and I'll have to do it again when I get her running. Take the self adjuster out and flip it back to the "start" of the ratchet mechanism.

Do you have the shop manual?

Yes I do have a manual ,and the P-brake is disconnected ,it was when I got it,I guess I will try to reset the adjuster, but the wheel was free ,the drum went back on fine like the shoes were in far enough to let this happen ,it's just weird now all this ,I must have disturbed something, maybe the spray loosened something. :?

park brake disconnected? at what point? the adjusters need some tension on them to keep them from drifting into an 'apply' position.

I will get back there and re-investigate , I have had no trouble in over 2 years until I took apart, I asked the guy today that I bought it from about the E-brake , and he said it was like that when he had it, so I will be looking to see if any one has a complete brake assy. from the handle to the drums ,I am pretty sure it is all gone, I have drove it yesterday and today and it never happened again ,the pulling and the tightness feeling like the brake is still applied :?: gremlins in my drums

a perfect example of not hearing the whole story .
without the brake cable there you will have pieces kinda just doing there own thing.
get them cables installed and things will be fine.

I know how all my other cars are 4wheel disc the e-brake keeps the rear disc adjusted , I would have thought after 27 months of driving and 15,000 miles, this I would have had a prob before now but like I was saying , the problem did go away it only done it that next day after I put it back together, , but anyway I know I do need the cables , hopefully a expert parts locator will zero in on some
