  • top speed question

My new aspire won't top out near as fast as my 91 gl would. Its a 97 5spd with a reallly good 94 drivetrain. My 91 was an automatic with what I would call more of a 3 out of 5 stars engine, and I could top it out on the straightaway at 108 or so, so why won't the aspire even hit 100? Its toppinh out at only bloody 95 or so in 4th gear. I took out the ac btw. Is this on par with my an aspire, a 5 speed, both, or is something else wrong, not being able to hit 100 is really bugging me, I wanna know why.

I REALLY doubt you did 108 in your B3 festiva...especially an auto. Aspire top speed sounds logical. If you wanna go fast there are bigger engines...

I always was amazed too but it did it, and on a regular basis too. Very strange, I wonder if my speedo was off

You had a festiva with a speedometer that went over 85? Or were you using GPS?

Very possible that your speedo was off anyway. Mine reads a few over at 55.

Plus you gotta think that an aspire is heavier than a festiva, with the same motor and drivetrain

              Has shorter gearing too.

Perhaps you were using 10" tires on the Festiva. That would make the speedo read high.

First, its easy to take apart the cluster and replace the speedo with one from a similar era mazda, and its verified acurate up to 80 (I figured if the first 80 where perfectly acurate the next 60). Anyways, what do u mean about the gearing. I was thinking it was geared lower to compensate for the weight but that it only effects the car by limiting it to like 120 or 30 instead 30 or 40 or some such. I thought the engine hp is mostly what effected it.

The gearing *is* lower in the aspire for the extra weight. The HP is what limits the speed though. At the top of 4th in an aspire is probably about 95-100mph. There isnt enough HP to really get any acceleration in 5th at that speed. Hard acceleration in top gear isnt really the best idea anyway.

True, swapping the cluster isn't quantum mechanics.
But, the verification of its accuracy came from where?
