  • engine stalls when I turn blinker on

Guys, I was driving home from work last night and when I turned my blinker on the engine stalled. It did this four times on the way home, then it finally came out of it. Do I have a ground wire problem? Or something else?
    I have a 90' 5-speed.

    Any help would be grateful!!

If its a ground wire problem where would a guy start looking?

    Mike

Or the wrong spec of blinker fluid was added by the PO. Just don't use the blinkers--put your hand out to signal.

is anything else..odd? maybe your harness got melted and your signals turn your car off? and something else operates your turn signal? hope not. i would say charging problem but i dont think turn signals are hardly enough to kill a car..

Possile ground? When you turn on the blinker the juice goes to ground? Things to check are blinker bulb wire, and fuse and blinker relay under dash. Spray WD-40 into blinker switch on steering column.

                Hey,

I have seen this before , but it was in a chevy celebrity. There was a short in the column, and when the signal lever was used it bumped the shorted portion and killed the car.

How are your grounds and battery terminals looking?

My car would stall out when I put it in reverse. Cleaning the engine bay grounds (front, passenger side behind the headlight) and terminals took care of the problem.

Here's an odd one: If it was raining, my '72 VW Squareback would stall if I made a left turn!
Turns out I had a giant rust hole up in the wheelwell, right across from the fuse box under the dash, during a left turn, the tire would splash water in there and short everything out.
If it has boobs or wheels, sooner or later you're going to have trouble with it.

My friends blazer would accelerate like crazy if he made a right turn, and choke off if he made a hard left...turns out it was his carb lol something was wrong with the float.

Also guys when the car is cold ( been sitting over night) when I turn the key on
my rad. fan starts running and the car will fire but than die right away. And than when I get it and turn the key sometimes the fan isn't running the car will fire right up and I have no problems.

I'm I thinking right that it is a ground problem still?

Is there anything I can try ?

                        Mike.

I think I would pull the steering column cover off and look for an exposed wire that's grounding out. With regards to the fan and stalling, I had a problem where the cooling fan wouldn't always come on when it got up to temp. I had to fiddle with the key to make sure all the accessories would work then it would make contact for the fan.

It may be a good idea to get a factory service manual for the car and also one for the electrical/vacuum troubleshooting. You can sometimes find them on that big auction site.

                          Good luck.

Thanks guys of your suggestions but I'm thinking it's something diff.
The last few times I've driven it ( my work car) The rad. fan hasn't come on when I turn the key and I haven't had a problem with anything and the car runs great.

I have some other signs I can give you that it does maybe one of you guys have seen this:

                              1. During the cold months when when I would turn the heater fan from off to on sometimes my seat belt restraint wouldn't work and sometimes it would, I would be going down the road and would turn the heater fan on than the restraint would work right when the turned the fan on.

                              2. right now my driver restraint does not work because I don't use the fan during the summer but I'm sure if I turned the fan on and off the restraint would work from time to time.

                              3. Not sure if thats all tided in with the rad. fan running when cold, the engine
dieing when I turn the blinker on etc.....

Does anybody have any idea whats going on, could it be a ground problem?
If it is where do i look? I just don't think it's in the steering column. maybe in the key switch maybe?

                              Any help would be great!
