  • What to do with bad valves?

Okay I bought a little festiva last week for a hundred and fifty Bucks knowing it had a dead cylinder but was hopeing it was just a stopped up injector or bad plug. But it wasn't. We put the air to it with the bad cylinder an foumd out it was the exhaust valve leaking. So we pulled the head off and the exhaust valve on the number three cylinder was missing a big chunk. So at first was going to just replace the bad valve. But got to looking and all the seats, on the valves and the head are ate up. Not terribly bad but not good either. I just don't know whether just to replace the one valve or have it redone because I don't want to spend for on the head than I paid for the car. And I only bought the car for fuel mileage to drive to school but I didn't know if this was common in these cars. Any help or suggetions would be much appreciated

well, it depends on how much you paid for the car... A head rebuild is usually around $200. I would not just replace that one valve, I would have all the valves ground and reseated. No, this is not a common failure for these cars.

Where are you located? Someone on here may have a good used head close to you they would sell cheap.
        You gonna race that thing?

How many miles were on this car when you got it? Valves actually do wear out after they go up and down say...A GAZILLION times.
Whatever you decide to do, whether it's to replace a couple of $4 valves, or get a "head job", get the injectors cleaned up because running too lean will burn up both old and new valves.

It's got Like a hundred and seventy thousand but I just went and talked to a man down the street that does head work and he is going to resurface the head, grind the seats, and put new valves in for fifty bucks so I think I'm going that route haha. And no I'm not raving this one but a buddy o mine has a late model dirt car and was wanting a little four banger to Rae at our local track and I know where another one is so I think we are turning it into a racer haha
