    Drive Axles

    I just replaced the drive axles on my 1989 Festiva L, auto
    Transmission and now I have a vibration when it is in gear and
    driving. Just wondering if anyone has any idea where I might have gone
    wrong. I have topped up the tranny fluid and torgued everything to the
    specs. Could I have knocked something out of alignment in the tranny
    or maybe the wheel alignment. Incidently I only replaced one at a time as I am aware of the possibility of screwing up the spider gears by removing both at the same time. I followed the instructions in the
    Haynes book to the letter. Thanks in advance for any help you might

    Is your harmonic balancer loose or missing?

      Is the harmonic balancer that rubber disc in the center of the right side axle?
      If so the new one didn't come with one.

        the harmonic balancer is not located on your driveshaft Tim, it is located behind the crankshaft pulley, to reduce the pulses the engine makes during each power stroke.

        that little rubber ring on the passenger drive shaft is crap

        its too small and light to do anything


        the vibration could be coming from the wheel bearing, nut too loose or bearings?

          I once saw a harmonica balancer in a music shop. It was between the violin case and the tuba toothpaste.

            Hey I like that, and I need a laff at this point. Well I replaced the new axles with the old ones and VOILA the vibration is gone! Tomorrow the parts guy will get me a couple new ones from a different supplier, and I hope that will be the end of it! Thanks for all your help guys.

              Well yesterday the parts guy got some axles from a different supplier and I put them on the car. They even went in so fast, I guess I am getting experienced at taking them in and out. I tool it for a test drive and they worked great, no vibration at all. Sometimes these re-manufactured parts are not up to specs so one has to beware! Thank you everyone for your help
