  • Weird.

The alt. belt on my 90 has been squealing whenever it's wet outside. Decided to swap out the belt. New one installed, properly tensioned. Swapped out the links for the pinks and greens while I was at it. Started the car afterwards, everything fine. Verified proper voltages across the battery. This was a few days ago. Got in the car today, fired it up, and the charge light was on. Shut the car off, double checked the belt, all is good. Put a multi-meter on the battery. Battery is good. Fired the car up, put the meter back on the battery, still good. Charge light still on. Shut the car off, retensioned the belt (just for S&Gs, basically) Started the car back up, noticed that the light would be off, unless I gave it a little gas, then the light would flicker. If I floored it, the light would stay on bright. As soon as I got off the gas, and the rpms dropped to idle, the light would go off. So then I started playing, trying to put a load on the system to see what would happen. Bear in mind, all this time, the voltage at the battery was good. So, gave it a little gas, the light flickered on, flipped on the lights, got a brief buzzing sound in the general location of the fusible links, and now I can't get the charge light to come on no matter what I do. Don't know if there was a bit of corrosion on one of the links/posts, and it had to cook that off, or what. And before you ask, no I did not blow the link. All electronics are still functioning properly. Lights, bells, whistles. As the title says, weird.

Before, during, and afterward, verified good voltage numbers across the battery every time it was tested. Thoughts? Ideas?

I hate it when the Gremlins get bored.:tongue1:

next you'll tell him he needs to buy a new skyhook. lol. my brotherinlaw has actually gotten someone to call the parts store and attempt a price quote on a skyhook. it sounds like it would be classic.. the parts store supposedly picked up on the joke and went with it too!

If the battery were fully charged, then you'd get "good" voltage no matter what the Alt was doing.
Unless there's a short in the system.
Might have been as simple as needing to "burnoff" the crud.

There should be 14.4 volts across the battery when running, 12 point something off. Right?

I doubt he needs a new skyhook, but the briggle capstan may be flawed

^Adjusting for the fact that my meter is not true RMS, I came up with 14.6 running, and 12.7 with the car off. Every time I checked it, it was within a tenth or two on both of those numbers. Drove the car today, no problemo.

Guess the gremlins have moved on to the next Festiva.

^^ Ha ha, you're pretty close to me, but there are a bunch of Festivas between us. Think you'll be okay for a few days.

I had a similiar problem with my car before too... turned out to the battery. Even though it was reading great ampage, there was a dead cell inside of the battery. And when the car was turned on, I had problems.
