After a drive and when the car is left in the sun and shut off the car, there is a bubbling noise from the petrol tank. Then I release the fuel filler cap and make a large whoosh sound and the bubbling stops. I was wondering if it's creating a vacuum inside the tank. Is it a good idea to drill a small hole in the filler cap?

There might be blockage in the breather tube?
I wouldnt recommend drilling hole in the cap. That could just cause problems

Never heard the gargling or whatever, but when I loosen the cap on my car, I can hear the woosh.

You might be better off buying another fuel cap, they're supposed to be vented. If you're in hot weather it may take a while for it to bleed down.

I drilled a small hole. I don't think that it's bad to drill a hole because the fuel can't come out , there is a metal flap inside. Now let's see how it gets along. Thanks

dunno about festivas, but leaving your gas cap on loosely or not putting it on will warrant a check engine light and poor performance on some cars.

my cousin's cavalier needed a new gas cap because it was leaking and causing the same symptoms.

I guess I'm just trying to agree and suggest you get a new gas cap.

i have a new and a couple gas caps u want it pay me $5 i have a vented one

You might have deeper issues than you are aware. I was having the same issues with my Aspire but it started affecting how it would run. I would pop the cap and it was like I was opening a 10 gallon bottle of Coke. What was happening is the pump was cutting out because it was getting way too hot. I first thought it was the exhaust blowing on the tank heating it up. Fixed the exhaust and it helped but didnt fix the issue on long drives.

I figured the fuel pump was on its way out the door so I went to a friends house to swap in his stock DSM pump as a replacement. I pulled my pump out of the tank and low and behold I found my problem. My fuel sock aka fuel strainer aka in tank filter was clogged it looked like some one dipped it in mud and threw it back in the tank. It was imploding in on itself and must have had a tiny hole to suck gas through. With the little amount of gas that it could get through it it was over heating in turn heating up the gas until the everything was hot enough to make the pump start cutting out. Went to autozone bought a new one and everything has been awesome after that.

your internal vapor release can is bad i have one for sale this releases the fumes from the tank i have one in my parts just realized i had this issue 5 years ago with my first festiva its in my parts galore forsale

I don't need these emmissions rubbish. The evaporative can is somewhere pieces after being crushed in the crusher. And the small hole in the fuel cap is working great. no more whosshing sound and vacuum in the tank. the valve in the cap work in the other order than vacuum. it opens if there is a lot of pressure not vacuum. So it will never opens.
