Greg, I'm in my 50's, been working on cars my whole life. I am NOT an expert, but I do know how to put on a rotor and cap. I even checked the rotor just to be sure. Cant put the rotor on backwards on mine without using a big hammer! I do have questions when it comes to the electronic ignition systems, as I am not fully aware of how, all the componets work together.
I can replace them, but have issues with trouble shooting the ignition componets to find out which is causing the problems.
Understood. My rotor button will go on in more than one direction. As far as being good at electronics, if you have spares, use process of elimination. These cars are pretty simple, compared to most newer cars. I'm no electrical guru either. Sorry I haven't been able to help. I do have a b3 electrical pieces if you need them.

As far as a mallory coil goes, I'm just a believer in stock parts hooked to stock parts (doesn't sound right coming from me huh?). And on electrical stuff I'd say ohms, and resistance could be different.

the rotor can be put on in 3 different positions....if you did not take note when you were pulling it off you could have put it back on in one of the wrong positions. You have a 33.3333% chance of guessing right. If not spark...change it by a third and try again.

I do not know electrical well at all...but if you have spark from the coil does that mean the module is good? (serious question...I do not know)

Well, according to FB71, not nessesarily. I'll try to T/Shoot some more:
Timing, ohm meter on coil, etc. I tell ya, the way this thing acted was..well, odd.. the way it acted up and stranded me, then ran fine when getting back to it. Drove for quite a while and then did it again. I've heard coils can do that, but all the coils that went out on me in past lives just died completely. Just dead.
I picked up a disty from JY a while back, dont know if it's good. I have stock coil that was good when removed, tested well with meter too. I'm slowly building up parts for this car, for improvement and for repairs. There just aren't enough 88-89 Festy's in JY's to pick from. I get frustrated, it might get a b6

I've seen NUMEROUS posts on here that have said the module acts up just like you are describing. Works then just stops....then works again. Get a known good disty and swap it in. You know anyone close that you can swap in their disty just to check it?
