  • Transmission problems need help

I have a '93L and it developed a horrible screeching coming from the transmission. I recently replaced the clutch pressure plate and throw out bearing. After I replaced the clutch it was harder to go into gear than it was before but I thought that maybe the clutch needed to be broke-in. With less than 1000 miles on the clutch driving down the road at highway speeds it started making this high pitched screeching with the clutch in or out. I put the car on stands to try to isolate the problem and the screeching was there even when it is not in gear and the wheels were spinning in neutral. Any suggestions?

It sounds like the pilot bushing or Throwout bearing. The hard clutch problem was probably the Throwout bearing not moving freely on the splines of the transaxle. When you put on the throwout bearing, did you work the clutch arm, to make sure the throwout bearing moved easily? I think, the throwout bearing has come loose.

        Trans should be ok.

That would be nice if it is the throw out bearing I really don't want to replace the transmission although I already have to pull it to change the throwout bearing. Does anyone know if I can buy just the pilot bearing I know I can get just the throw out bearing it is almost half the price of the clutch. When I had the transmission out I worked the fork all seamed ok. Is it possible that I some how put the throwout bearing in backwards? I am almost positive I didn't but I was working on it in the middle of the winter outside so I suppose I could have put it in wrong in haste. The car has been down for about 6 months and I miss it my truck is killing me in fuel.

Are you sure you have oil in the transmission? Make sure your drain plug is in. In 1000 miles it could have come loose or fallen out if you didn't tighten it when you drained the transmission. You said it makes the noise going down the road. It can't be the pilot bearing because the pilot bearing is not moving when the transmission is in gear and the clutch is engaged when your driving down the road.
            You gonna race that thing?
