  • Tighened spindle nut too much...stripped...

It wasnt on my Festy, but,my 99 Ranger .Replaced rotor today and had to redo bearings.Torque wrench was set wrong and over tightened.Tried to remove it and start over.Hard to turn and feels like it is stripped or at an angle. What,if anything is the fix for something like this ? I hope I don't have to replace the spindle.I am taking to a friends mechanic shop in the morn to see what he things.Bearings are not tight right now.Snug, but, not right.

Hopefully it is just the nut if anything is stripped. I wouldn't drive it far if it is indeed stripped out. As far as repairing the spindle, I would think it would need replaced. You may be able to re-thread it if it isn't too bad, but then it may be undersized for the nut. Let us know what you find out.

Usually axle nuts are designed to strip-out so you do not have to replace the axle. When you get the nut off, use a wire brush to clean the axle's thread of metal particles, before you put a new nut on. If the threads on the axle is stripped, you maybe able to add flat washers to space the nut out past the damaged area.

HAH. I've seen axles strip too...many of them.

Torch her off Tony. Then replace the axle, stake nut, and bearings/seals/races!
