  • Need tips for removing cv axles

    I've worked on 3 different cars (1 festiva, 2 aspires) removing cv axles and each car had a different problem and solution for the removal. Two of the above mentioned cars had bad axles tha needed to be replaced. So it didn't matter how we get them out as long as they moved.

    So for the more seasoned mechanics out there... what's the tip on removing a cv axle?!?

    I'm looking online and searching local shops for a "CV axle removal tool" and have only found one tool that looks "promising".

    Does anyone know the diameter in mm of a cv axle? The tools I found on ebay are for 63mm or 48mm.

    What worked for me is to take a big pry bar, and in between the tranny and the axle, pry out on it.

      I did that on the Festiva... but the two Aspires I've worked on were more difficult than that. In once case, we ended up pulling the CV axle apart trying to tug the shaft out of the transmission.

      I'm getting ready to replace my transmission on my Aspire and I don't want to damage the axles or transmission case during the removal.

        Put it in neutral and turn them while pulling. It should make it easier.
        The normal is not always normal... MOST is not ALL... And any job can be hard if you don't have the right tools!!!

            If you can get one shaft out,you can take a long screwdriver or metal rod and slide it in the hole where the cv shaft came out.Give it a couple of whacks and drive the stubborn one out from the inside!!

              I just pulled my half shafts out for a bp swap a few mins ago. The drivers side shaft was a pain but after yanking on it for over an hour it finally came out. I tryed using a screw driver form the inside but i didnt have a thin enough or long enough one.

                the driver side cv shaft stuck on mine and caused me to bust a giant hole in the side of a perfectly good 4spd tranny.. and also bust a brand new cv shaft as well. when i get around to replacing my clutch, im not going to be removing the cv shafts, too much work.

                  When i changed the clutch in my friends aspire i didn't even try to take the drivers shaft out. It seams like that side is always harder.

                    If you have a tough axle, try using 2 pry bars. Place one between the axle and trans, like you're going to pry it out. Don't pry, just get it in there tight. Take the other and place it on the opposite side. Give this one a couple of good whacks with a heavy hammer and the axle will pop out.

                      If you pulled a CV joint apart, you did it wrong. 91bluFestiva method is correct. Finding the best pry point on the trans is tough. The prybar wants to slip. If you have a mini sledgehammer, give it a good wack on the end of the prybar. Note it is easier to pop loose if the other end is removed out of the spindle.
