  • A/C Conversion?

I know there's probably already a thread about this somewhere, but my searching skills can't seem to pull it up.

I have a 93 Festiva L that is my daily driver. I also have a donor 88 Festiva LX that is loaded to the gills with options. It has dual power windows, rear wiper and defrost, AC, tilt wheel, etc.

My question is, how much of this stuff can I convert over to my 93? Did my 93 come from the factory with all the hookups necessary, and I just need to do the swaps? Or is my 93 completely different? My main goals are just the AC conversion, and a back hatch conversion so that I can have the rear defrost and wiper.

    Is this even possible?

    all things

All things are possible. Including, power door locks, power mirrors and cruise control.
You could even install some new backup sensors and GPS!

      Asking again.....

l'm bumping this back to the top to see if anyone has any real input on this question. I was kind of hoping for a serious answer from someone. I want A/C and rear wiper/defog.....not back up beepers and GPS.

What I'm really asking is this.....are the stripped down L models such as my 93 built completely different than the "loaded" LX model like the 88 I referred to? Are the wiring harnesses made in an identical fashion, where the only difference might be that not all the plugs are utilized on the stripped down models due to not having the options? Or is a completely different wiring harness that cannot accept the donated parts? My 93 has cover plates in place of the switches that the 88 has for the power mirrors, rear defog, rear wipers, A/C, etc.; it just doesn't have the actual switches. Also, I see that there is a place for all the A/C plumbing to go through the firewall.

So, any helpful posts would be much appreciated.

88-93 shells are the same... The harness for the 93 has all the plugs for "extras" but
your 88 harness has different plug ends that I dont think will match.
I know that all 90-93 stuff interchanges and that the 89lx auto has the "weird" EFI.
mirrors and rear wiper/defog hatch should be diret swap. as well as A/C, but the plugs might be different on the A/C. you will just have to look at the plugs.

          Removal

          Installation

But according to the removal guide it says there are differences between the line routing on Carbureted and Fuel Injected models beacuse of the air intake, so taking A/C from a '88-89 Carbureted car and putting it in a Fuel Injected car might take some extra work.

The wiring harness are different between carb models and FI, and the high pressure line has to be rerouted due to the location of the FI air intake box. You will need the wiring harness from a FI car for certain, but you can bend the hard line to make it work. All other pieces are the same, save FI models that were factory type also had a secondary pusher cooling fan mounted in front of the Condensor also.
There were also Dealer installed units on many FI cars, so you want the factory style A/C harness if you are using the carb system. You can ID the difference between the Dealer VS Factory units by the mounting of the compressor. Factory units have a bracket bolted to the engine block that the compressor is mounted on, while the Dealer compressor had four bolts straight though them into the block, and had rubber hoses high and low side VS the Factory style that had a hard line on the passenger side of the engine compartment. I have pictures if it helps.

Oh, and as far as "stripped" VS "loaded", the only cars where that showed up on were the very first carb models with ABSOLUTELY no options. They did have a different wiring harness that did not even have wiring for rear speakers, let alone for the rear wiper, power mirrors, rear defog etc.
Then you had the 89 ATX..... But they stand on their own on everyting but options. I have one of those too, and robbed the options off it for use in my carb cars.
