  • no heat

I know the auto store gives use the wrong thermostat. But i went ahead and got the 190deg tstat. When i got it in the car would run untill stee would come out of the radiator cap. I let the car cool down. Then i took the tstat out. Now the car never gets up to temp. It stays at or just above the 0 mark.

Can i use some hvac heat tape on the radiator. Like put some on the bottom then let it get up to temp, check the heat. If that doesnt work put more tape on it till its good.

Is this a good or bad idea. I have the tape. The nearest dealer from me is 50 miles away. I kinda want heat now so going to go get the right tstat is out of the question for now.

When the steam was coming out of the radiator cap I'm guessing the car had overheated? Kinda vague from your post, but if thats what happened then I would guess possibly a clogged heater core... did you feel for heat at BOTH heater core pipes when the car was warmed up with the T-stat in? Also, with the T-stat out you probably won't ever get heat even if your heater core isn't clogged.

well lets just say that the core is clogged. Is their a way i can fix it? Can i buy something off the shelf that would break it up (like draino). I still have the tstat that came in the car. The day i drove it home it was fine. After i reset the time it started to overheat. I put more antifrezze in it and took out the tstar and it funs great just no heat.

could the tstat that came in the car just became stuck shut? and the new one i bought just be to high of a temp for the car? If i go head and go get the right tstat do you think it would just overheat again

more than likely, when you replaced the t-stat, there was air introduced into the system that wasn't burped out and that can cause a flash boil/overheat situation. re-install the t-stat after flushing the rad and then properly burp the system. shouldn't have any issues after that.

One more question, when the "stee would come out of the radiator cap" did you have heat at that point? If so then FestYboy is probably right. From that way I read your first post I thought you weren't getting heat ever, even when the motor overheated. But if it had heat when the "stee" came out, probably just air in the system.

i will try to put the tstat back in and flush it.

When i drove the car home for the frist time it didnt have heat. It had the tstat in it.
So it sounds like the tstat is bad to me. Then new one i got is not a 2 stage so i dont think it will work.

U guys think i should just get the right tstat and install it the right way.

Get the right stat first. And if it does get warmed up to the "normal" on the guage just check and see if it has heat then. If not the probably a clogged core or a LOT of air in the system keeping it from flowing the coolant properly. Oh and wasn't really trying to poke fun at you on the spelling, I do the same thing myself... I was just in a sarcastic mood at the time lol

if you think the heater core is clogged, an easy way to try and u clog it is with a garden hose, take both heater hoses off the engine side leaving the hoses clamped on the core. butt the garden hose up to the heater hose and watch the liquid coming out of the other hose. when it runs clear, switch hoses and reverse the flow thru the core and repeat the prosses till its all just water and no particulates.
