    Red goes on the bottom. Mine is advanced just past half way. You've gone way too far in the picture.

        Ok, so I advanced it according to your advice. I have it at about 1/2 and 1/2. Now, it wants to die if I don't give it a little gas. The carb is adjusted all the way up. Also, if I rev it up and let it come back down, I can hear a kind of scratchy hiss. I was thinking vac, but I'm obviously not the greatest mechanic out there. Thanks

        Also, you mention a timing light. I have never used one, and have no idea even how it works. I have never gotten that far into fixing a car before. I have changed alt., oil, plugs, wires, and simple stuff like that. I have never had a timing issue before. Can you explain how this device works? Thanks
        The normal is not always normal... MOST is not ALL... And any job can be hard if you don't have the right tools!!!

          Mark TDC on the crank pulley itself with white out. Hook the light up and clamp number 1 spark plug wire and start the car. Point the light at the crank pulley and watch the mark. Adjust the disty and keep the mark as close to the TDC mark as possible. This insures correct ignition timing.

          TDC = Top Dead Center

          You can get digital timing lights that give you detailed readings but there expensive. I think I paid like 20 bucks from harbor freight for just a standard light. Since you dont really know how they work, Ill explain. when the light is pointed at the pulley you will see a flash of light when the car fires on the number 1 spark plug. Since the number 1 spark plug fires first in the firing order, this is why the flash must hit the TDC mark on the crank pulley.
