  • Carbed Festiva runs like fart- is it because I threw away...

Okay, about a year ago I replaced the catalytic converter, and then the whole exhaust system. The new cat didn't have the pipe fitting that goes up to the side of the carburetor. Thinking that this was just a mechanism that heats the carburetor, I took it all off the air filter assy. and welded up the other pipe that goes in the exhaust manifold (I think I recall being in a "chopper building" sort of mood). There were vacuum lines of some sort that hooked to that air filter assembly thing, and they have been just hanging off the firewall.

Is this maybe why the car runs rich, has a jumpy idle, and gets snot for gas mileage? Could I just plug the vacuum lines (I think there are 3 or 4) to resolve this problem? The car starts fine, doesn't stall or anything, but, like I said, gets around 20-23 mpg. I think its fouling out the plugs now. Lemme know what you all think- Thanks!

note to self- unlike motorcycles, taking factory parts off a car doesn't necessarily make it cool, or even "Kustom". Lesson learned.

Open vacuum lines would cause the car to run like crap. Do the lines run to the row of solenoids on the firewall?

Those pipes you modified were emissions stuff; I don't know if they have any impact on performance (probably not).

Just out of curiosity, did you put the Festiva carb and intake on the B6?

yeah, I put the festiva carb and intake on the b6. I'm pretty sure that the vacuum lines are from the line of different colored ones on the firewall. I'll have to go look later, my wife is driving the Festiva.

I thought the pipes were just emission stuff. At least I can feel a little vindication!

so, should I just plug them with a bolt or something? Maybe hook 'em all together and make a little vacuum-suck party. Or would that just -suck- even more?

There's 3 ports on the air filter that the lines plug into. The lines often get ripped off when the air filter pan is removed.

Try checking elsewhere on the carb for loose lines; these things sometimes pop off.

If you wanted you could connect the lines together. I don't know what that would do - probably nothing.

ive just disabled the same vaccum pipes on my mate festie. the engine runs fine but i believe the vaccum diaphragm for the choke is tied into those pipes( which control the hot/cold weather interchange on the air pan) through the vaccum rack attached to the fire wall....means we have lost the choke so cold running is abit rough...we've pretty much no need for the choke as the car is currently being modded to see how much power we can get out of the stock engine.....a coil with a higher output also helps , ht leads and Bosch super 4 sparks are the best thing u can do to any engine.....

but you defiantly cant have vaccum leaks,, as the vaccum lines are connected to the electrics and fuel...means u have no control over spark or fuel flow...

          hope this helps>>>>

            you're kidding, right?

the raster and parade pattern on those plugs is horendous. I've had infinately better results with Denso iridiums.
